The Young Storyteller
While studying the works of great writers and poets in African American literature courses at Howard University, Jasira quickly realized that she wanted to be a storyteller. She was fascinated with Amiri Baraka, Ntozake Shange, Gloria Naylor and Ann Petry. She loved all of the places & emotions one could experience while reading. She desired to take readers on a journey through poetry. She would write poems for hours on Howard's campus. Her first book of poetry, 'Bruised Kisses: A Collection of Poetry' was filled with poems from her days journaling poetry as a college student.
Creating The Micro-Stage Play
Always wanting to push herself to the next level, Jasira studied the art of playwriting to create a one in a million book signing for Woman on the Move: Unapologetic Poetry. She worked with a play production company to audition, cast and rehearse her adaptation of her book after she turned it into a micro-stage play.
The Book Launch
Audiences were so excited to come to a book signing and get a short stage play! Jasira wanted to create an experience through poetry that showed the power and resilience of women. The event was held in Lake Park, Florida at Mos'Art Theatre and hosted by Kadeidra 'Poetic-ly Yours' Ward and featured local artists such as KwickDraw McGraw.
